Follow the posted arrows and turn right up the bottom of the wash.Īpproach a slot canyon to the west where the wash cuts into a wall sandstone. Valley of Fire State Park has been a filming location for lots of movies like Transformers, Casino, Total Recall, Star Trek: Generations, and Austin Powers.īeyond what is left of the film set, the trail continues south and immediately drops into Kaolin Wash. A sign explains that the fake ruins were used in the film, The Professionals, which also built a larger Mexican hacienda set at the site of the current White Domes Day Use Area. Reach the “ruins” a third of a mile from the start of the hike and discover that the wall (made of stone with timbers and plaster) is actually a leftover from a 1965 movie production. Film set ruins and the sandstone to the north The view looking back toward the fin of sandstone you walked along is particularly impressive. Reach the desert floor in an open area surrounded by an amphitheater of extraordinary rock formations. Hike south toward what appears to be the ruins of an old stone wall. Use stone steps built into a steeper part of the draw to pass just below the almost-arch. On the left side, you’ll see one shaped like a molar that is yellow on top and orange lower down. A collection of different shaped domes and ridges rise beyond that. This is your first example that White Domes Trail is constantly refreshing your view with beautiful scenery.Īhead, the terrain drops away down a slope between the big sandstone formations. Cross a crest in the loose sand and catch sight of a beautiful landscape to the south. We typically take this route during traffic hours.Leave from the end of the parking lot and walk up a sandy trail between tall sandstone formations. This route takes you to the east entrance next to Elephant Rock. If you have a National Park Annual Pass like us, then you don’t have to worry about it. You also have to drive past Lake Mead pay stations, which is a steep price just for driving through. This route takes longer because the roads are windier and the speed limit is lower, but it happens to be the more scenic of the two. If you’re closer to Henderson, there is another route that takes you through Lake Mead National Recreation Area. Once you exit, you’ll drive an additional half-hour on a small two-way road that will take you to the pay station of the park. There are signs for Valley of Fire for the exit. ![]() From Las Vegas, head north on I-15 to exit 75. There are some tour options:įor the best experience, we highly recommend renting a car and having a DIY itinerary. There isn’t any public transportation going out to Valley of Fire. Stop by the Visitor Center to find out more. Rock climbing is limited to specific areas of the park.There is a small gift shop at the Visitor Center where you can pick up snacks and drinks, but it’s best to bring everything you need. If you plan on going in the Fall, Winter, or Spring, bring layers because temperatures will drop as the sun goes down. Bring lots of water, especially when it’s miserably hot in the summer.Shaded picnic areas with restrooms are located at Atlatl Rock, Seven Sisters, the Cabins, near Mouse’s Tank Trailhead, and White Domes.Bathrooms: There are pit toilets throughout the park, but the Visitor Center has the best flush toilets.We typically assume we won’t get service, but there are wifi plans available in the park. Fill up if you’re worried about running out of gas. The closest gas station is right at the exit off of I-15.They are not allowed in the Visitor Center. Pets are allowed but must be on a leash at all times.If you plan on seeing the main sites, you’ll have to pass by it. The Visitor Center is located halfway between the east and west entrance on the Valley of Fire Hwy. ![]()
